What does Form 1099-MISC report?
Form 1099-MISC is the IRS information return for miscellaneous payments a business makes during the year — things like rent of $600 or more, royalties over $10, prizes and awards, medical and health care payments, and payments to an attorney. Since 2020, payments to independent contractors for services belong on Form 1099-NEC instead, so check which form your payment type actually requires before you start.
Who prepares it, and who receives it?
The payer — typically a small business, landlord's property manager, or organization — fills out a 1099-MISC for each qualifying recipient, sends the recipient their copy by January 31, and files a copy with the IRS. Recipients don't fill anything out; they use the form to report the income on their own return. To complete one accurately you'll need the recipient's W-9 on file for their name, address, and taxpayer identification number.
An important note about Copy A
If you plan to paper-file with the IRS, you must use the official scannable red-ink Copy A, which has to be ordered from the IRS — a printed black-and-white version cannot be submitted and may trigger a penalty.
